This, after the National were drawn into Group D with their 2025 Asia Cup Qualifiers foes New Zealand and Chinese Taipei as a result of the proceedings which were done on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.

Also joining the Philippines, the Tall Blacks, and the Taiwanese in the tournament which is to be held from August 5 to 17 is Iraq.

The Tim Cone-coached squad previously split their matchups with New Zealand and Taipei during the qualifiers, and they ended up as the second-best team with their 4-2 record in Group B as they also swept Hong Kong. NZ, on the other hand, topped their group with a 5-1 record.

Gilas will now look to at least repeat their glory in the Asia Cup proper.

Only the best-ranked squad will outright advance to the quarterfinals, while the second-place team after the group stage will be going through a crossover play-in to enter the playoffs.

In addition, also among the factors that Gilas needs to deal with is the respective statuses of Kai Sotto and Justin Brownlee.

The 7-foot-3 Sotto is still in the middle of his recovery from his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, while Brownlee is not only recuperating from a dislocated right thumb, but is also awaiting FIBA’s ruling after yet another flagged drug test.
