Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is expected to miss the rest of the NBA season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee, ESPN has reported.

Shams Charania of ESPN provided the update on Tuesday evening, hours after Irving had to be helped off the court in the Mavericks' 122-98 defeat to the Sacramento Kings.

The 32-year-old guard suffered the injury late in the first quarter, with his knee bending at an awkward angle after a layup attempt. He stayed in the game to shoot free throws before returning to the Dallas locker room.

A nine-time All-Star, Irving had been averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Mavericks this season.

His injury is the latest blow to the franchise, which dropped to 32-30 with the loss to Sacramento. Dallas is also missing Anthony Davis due to an adductor injury as well as several members of their supporting cast.
