MANILA – The family of Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo on Sunday evening cheered and rejoiced after clinching his second gold medal, as they prayed and hoped for more success for the athlete. 

His father Mark Andrew Yulo told ABS-CBN News he was so happy that his son defeated other strong gymnasts in the category. 

"Ang lalakas ng kalaban niya, talagang nakalaban niya yan sa nakaraang Olympics… talagang madugo yang laban na yan. Pinagpaguran niya," said Mark Andrew.

He also has this message to his son: "Anak. Congrats ulit, na-double gold ka na. History na 'yan. Sana mag-bonding tayo ng kapatid mo at mama mo."

"Pag-usapan natin ng magaganda yung mga hindi nangyayari sa media na pangit. Mag-usap tayo," he added. 

Yulo's grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, said his family is also celebrating two occasions this Sunday – his birthday and Caloy's second gold medal. 

Frisco said he was the person who introduced the Olympic gold medalist to the world of gymnastics in 2008. 

"Naku, jusko. Ang masasabi ko – hindi ko alam kung gaano kasaya, hindi ko ma-explain sa sobrang saya," he said. 

"Nadagdagan ang saya ko kasi parang dininig ni God ang prayers ko na maka-gold siya sa Olympics," his grandfather said of the double celebration.  

Yulo's childhood playmate and neighbor Jerome Prado, meanwhile, said he is proud of what Carlos has become. 

"Naglalaro kami sa 'Paraiso ng Batang Maynila'... malakas," Prado said. 

"Congratulations. Dapat marami pa siyang makuhang gold," he added.  

Yulo ruled the vault finals of men's artistic gymnastics on Sunday night at the Bercy Arena. 

His triumph comes a day after winning gold in the floor exercise for the Philippines' first medal of the Summer Games.  

With his victory in vault, Yulo has ensured that the country will improve upon its performance in Tokyo in 2021, when Hidilyn Diaz brought home the Philippines' first-ever gold medal.
