MANILA – Japanese volleyball superstar Ran Takahashi has this take on how Asian teams could match Western squads on the international stage.

While acknowledging that we lack in terms of height and power, Takahashi said improving the quality of volleyball especially in ball accuracy could help Asian squads compete among the best nations in the world.

Playing in a foreign league could also help, he added.

"As a common weak point in Asian countries, Asian teams, it's like the height, and the power and considering other countries like Brazil, we are still lower. Our improving point is that we need to do high quality, and also the accuracy of the play, and also by playing in a foreign country's league, it's going to grow up [from] here," Takahashi said through a translator on Friday at The Biopolis in Pasay City.

"These are really important for improving the strongness of the team," he went on.

He also has this advice for people who want to get better in the sport.

"I started playing volleyball at six years old. I don’t know what’s the future for me. But if you set a higher goal, it will be really good, and challenging is really important whether you are going to challenge or not you should challenge. If I challenge you can make experiences yourself and it’s gonna make a good future for yourself," Takahashi said through a translator.

The 22-year-old Japanese national team mainstay is in the Philippines for brand ambassadorship of electronics company Akari Lighting.

On the same day, he visited SM Megamall to meet his ecstatic Filipino fans.

Takahashi, who returned to the country after the Manila leg of the 2024 FIVB Men's Volleyball Nations League earlier this year, said he's always amazed at the love of his Pinoy supporters.

"[When] I come to the Philippines, I’m really amazed. I came to the Philippines because of the Philippine rounds [of the VNL] and I was really surprised, the supporters really supported [me] strongly and the stadium was shaking. I feel a lot of emotions, I’m really supported by [Filipino] fans."
