MANILA — The Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) has responded to a recent incident which involved a 17-year-old yellow belt taekwondo student who was injured during a sparring session with a black belter.

The PTA affirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all members within the taekwondo community following the incident that happened in February.

The involved teenager, who engaged in sparring with a taller and heavier counterpart,  sustained bruising under the eye and facial swelling, and it required hospitalization.

"We are working within our jurisdiction to gather all relevant information and assess the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident," the PTA stated as they acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, saying as well that they are actively investigating to determine the facts and ensure accountability.

"Our primary goal is to ensure accountability and take appropriate actions to prevent such incidents in the future."

The federation also urged everyone to refrain from making hasty judgments until the investigation is completed, especially given the age of one of the affected parties.

"The Philippine Taekwondo Association is well aware of the public's concern and we hear you. May we encourage everyone to be prudent in their comments as there are minors involved in this incident," they penned.
