Over 100 members of the UP College of Law faculty have signed a letter urging senators to comply with their constitutional duty to “forthwith proceed” with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

UP assistant professor Paolo Tamase said many of those who signed teach constitutional law in UP including former law school deans.

“Lubha kaming nababahala dun sa mga moves na i-dismiss ‘yung impeachment case laban kay Vice President Duterte kahit hindi pa man nakakakita ng isang testigo o ebidensya yung Senado base on technical grounds. Sa palagay namin…hindi naman mga seryosong grounds laban sa pagpapatuloy ng impeachment,” he said in a Gising Pilipinas interview.

Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in February for "high crimes" including corruption and an alleged assassination plot against former ally and running mate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Senate President Chiz Escudero announced that the prosecution panel's scheduled presentation at the Senate would be moved to June 11 instead of June 2, citing the tackling of "priority legislative measures before the 19th Congress adjourns" as the reason for the postponement.

He said that the Senate plenary will decide if the impeachment trial of Duterte can cross over to the 20th Congress.

Tamase said the letter urges senators to look at the Philippine Constitution through the lens of truth, adding that it is the Upper Chamber’s duty to seek out the truth in the impeachment trial.

“Gusto naming marinig ‘yung depensa ng VP. Gusto naming makita ‘yung ebidensya. Gusto naming malaman ‘yung katotohanan,” he said.

Failure to let the Vice President answer the charges would mean that the issue of alleged misuse of confidential funds would be left hanging, he said.

“Bagaman kakaunti na lang ang araw sa sesyon ng Senado, mahalaga pa rin na magsimula na agad-agad,” he added.

He also said the end of the 19th Congress does not mean the impeachment process is automatically dismissed.

“Sa palagay namin, pwede siyang tumawid ng 20th Congress,” he said.
