MANILA, Philippines – Phoenix's Matthew Wright became the second rookie to earn Player of the Week honors in the PBA Philippine Cup after his all-around game helped the Fuel Masters secure a playoff for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Wright helped Phoenix beat NLEX and Barangay Ginebra last week to hike their record to 6-4, assuring them of at least a playoff for a quarterfinals spot.

The Fil-Canadian wingman averaged 15 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assists for the Fuel Masters. He is the second rookie to be named Player of the Week, after Blackwater's Mac Belo (November 20-27), and the second Phoenix player, after veteran JC Intal (November 28-December 4).

Wright came one assist shy of a triple-double in their 102-91 win over NLEX last Wednesday, instead settling for a 12-point, 12-rebound, 9-assist performance.

Four days later, he overcame a shaky start to score all of his 18 points in the second half to help Phoenix fend off Ginebra, 79-73.

The 25-year-old Wright beat out Phoenix teammates JC Intal, Simon Enciso, and Willy Wilson for the weekly citation, along with San Miguel's Arwind Santos, Meralco's Cliff Hodge, TNT's Troy Rosario and Roger Pogoy, Alaska's Vic Manuel and Calvin Abueva, and Ginebra's Scottie Thompson.

Phoenix closes out its elimination round schedule against Alaska on Friday.
