On November 22, a few hours following King Charles III’s shoutout to K-pop supergroup BLACKPINK, Lisa, Rosé, Jisoo, and Jennie had the pleasure of receiving the royal seal of approval for spreading climate change awareness and taking action to support sustainability efforts and environmental campaigns.

During a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, the South Korean superstars were recognized for their role in promoting the programs of United Nations’ COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland in 2021. Britain’s honors system acknowledges effortful acts, support, and outstanding service to the country, its citizens, and the wider world.

At the state banquet, the British sovereign said in his speech, “I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars.” He made BLACKPINK honorary members of the Order of the British Empire in the presence of Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon Hee.

To further celebrate the quartet’s collective efforts, the band ensemble of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards played the popular BLACKPINK single “DDU-DU DDU-DU.” In their socials, the Royal Family captioned the video clip with a famous quote from the film Mean Girls, tweaking it a tad bit. “On Wednesdays, we play BLACKPINK,” the caption goes.

“I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé, better known collectively as BLACKPINK, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience as Ambassadors for the U.K.’s Presidency of COP26, and later as advocates for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals,” Charles continued.

BLACKPINK has been appointed as a global ambassador by U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres. On behalf of Great Britain’s government, also, the group was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), which is a major medal conferred by The Crown to individuals or groups with an invaluable contribution to society and its constituents.
