More than 1,000 drums of oil have been removed from the San Isidro River in San Pedro City, Laguna, following an oil spill caused by a fire at the warehouses in Kengian Complex on January 24.

The Philippine Coast Guard said cleanup operations are ongoing in collaboration with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Biñan, PENRO San Pedro, and Harbor Star.

Using oily waste collectors from Clean Leaf International Corporation and JM ECOTECH, the collected oil, along with oil-contaminated water, was transported to their respective treatment facilities for storage and disposal.

Prior to the cleanup operation, oil spill booms were deployed to prevent further water contamination and to facilitate the collection of oil.

As of yesterday, a total of 1,231 drums or 246,170 liters of oil and oil-contaminated water have been collected.

The operation was led by the Marine Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM), Coast Guard Logistics Systems Command (CGLSC), and Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog (CGDSTL), along with other Coast Guard stations in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) of San Pedro City.
