MANILA -- A China Coast Guard vessel engaged in "reckless and dangerous maneuvers" against the smaller BRP Cabra on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Coast Guard said.

According to Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, China Coast Guard vessel 3302 attempted a head-on collision with BRP Cabra.

"It is important to note that the China Coast Guard vessel 3302 has engaged in reckless and dangerous maneuvers, displaying a blatant disregard for safety," he said.

The maneuver raised concerns "about the China Coast Guard's adherence to the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs), of which they are a signatory," said Tarriela.

Tarriela hailed the "seamanship skills and professionalism" of the BRP Cabra crew as they averted the collision.

The PCG said BRP Cabra has pushed the China Coast Guard vessel further away, and the ship is now located approximately 92-96 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island.

BRP Cabra will remain steadfast in its mission to challenge the China Coast Guard vessel's illegal patrol, the PCG also said.

Just on Saturday, the BRP Cabra confronted the same China Coast Guard vessel after it was detected approaching within 83 to 85 nautical miles off the coast of Palauig, Zambales.

China claims most of the South China Sea despite an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis, and its coast guard has clashed repeatedly with that of the Philippines. - with a report from Agence France-Presse
