MANILA — The recent sighting of nine Chinese Navy vessels off the northern coast of Luzon will not affect the ongoing Philippine-US maritime drills, an official said Friday.

People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy vessels were first monitored on Tuesday. These included the aircraft carrier Shandong (CV-17), six escort warships, and two support vessels.

“Definitely, it will not have an effect doon sa execution ng mga event natin. We will focus on our objective which is to enhance our interoperability and cooperation with other nations,” said Commander Johanns Cruzada, the commanding officer of the BRP Ramon Alcaraz .

“‘Pag sinabi natin interoperability, dito natin na-enhance o napapractice kung paano tayo makipag-communicate, makipag-sama-sama mag-maneuver at makipag-conduct ng different maneuvers with other nations. Ito ay ating ginagawa taon-taon para ma-improve yung ating kakayahan particularly sa Philippine Navy sa pag-conduct ng different operations,” he added.

The Multilateral Maritime Exercise (MME) is one of the major activities lined up for this year’s PH-US Balikatan Exercises.

Key activities for MME include communications exercises, cross-deck landing qualifications, division tactics, photo exercises, replenishment at sea, maritime search and rescue, and gunnery drills.

These activities involve naval the United States' USS Savannah and USS Comstock and the Philippines' BRP Ramon Alcaraz and BRP Apolinario Mabini, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

“Una, yung sa gunnery exercises natin, this aim to enhance the capability of our personnel, ng ating mga kasundaluhan natin kung paano humawak at kung paano gamitin yung ating mga baril dito sa ating barko,” Cruzada added.

“Yung po namang replenishment at sea napaka-importante po nito dahil dito po pwede po tayong sinisimulate natin kung paano tayo makapaglagay ng fuel at sea at para ma-extend po natin yung endurance ng ating barko.”

The MME will run until April 29.

The AFP earlier said that this year’s exercise with expanded participation from regional partners “underscores a shared commitment to peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific.”
