MANILA — Police Gen. Rommel Marbil, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, on Wednesday said that since he took office last year, over 750 cops have been sacked for various violations.

Marbil took the helm of PNP in April 2024.

According to PNP data, a total of 753 PNP personnel were dismissed from service due to various grave offenses, including:

  • • 493 cases of AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave)
  • • 38 cases of illegal drug use
  • • 18 cases of robbery/extortion
  • • 15 cases of carnapping
  • • Unspecified number of cases of homicide, murder, rape, and graft/malversation

The PNP said all disciplinary actions went through "due process, fair investigations, and administrative review."

“Our mission is to serve and protect the public, not to instill fear or abuse power. Any police officer found guilty of misconduct or illegal activities has no place in the PNP," Marbil said.

President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. earlier this month extended Marbil's tenure until June.

He was originally set to retire on February 7.
