“In terms of the interview that was conducted with the wife, the AFP understands her concern—she is emotionally involved being the wife—but for the AFP, we’ll look into the evidence-based results of the investigation. Anything in our power to help in aiding the truth come out from this, we will do in the AFP,” military spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said in a press briefing.

The AFP maintained that Deng engaged in “unauthorized foreign surveillance and reconnaissance activity” that targeted military camps, police camps, power plants, offices of local government units, seaports, airports and shopping malls in the country.

Padilla said that while Deng and his cohorts were not able to enter military camps, the AFP still implements “more heightened” security measures in its camps.

The NBI and the AFP earlier said the Chinese man was possibly linked to a suspected operation of a foreign power to map the Philippines because "high-precision topographic mapping" was found in their vehicle during the arrest.
