The NBI said a Chinese national and two Filipinos were arrested due to alleged espionage.

MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday said its findings still stand despite the statement of the wife of Chinese national Deng Yuanqing claiming her husband was not a spy.

“In terms of the interview that was conducted with the wife, the AFP understands her concern—she is emotionally involved being the wife—but for the AFP, we’ll look into the evidence-based results of the investigation. Anything in our power to help in aiding the truth come out from this, we will do in the AFP,” military spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said in a press briefing.

The AFP maintained that Deng engaged in “unauthorized foreign surveillance and reconnaissance activity” that targeted military camps, police camps, power plants, offices of local government units, seaports, airports and shopping malls in the country.

On January 20, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Deng and two Filipinos were arrested for reported espionage activities.

Padilla said that while Deng and his cohorts were not able to enter military camps, the AFP still implements “more heightened” security measures in its camps.

“It’s really our SOP to fortify the security of our camps. But over and above that, with our internal security protocols, the entry of visitors inside camps is heightened. Of course, even our cybersecurity,” Padilla said.

The NBI and the AFP earlier said the Chinese man was possibly linked to a suspected operation of a foreign power to map the Philippines because "high-precision topographic mapping" was found in their vehicle during the arrest.
