MANILA (UPDATED) — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Tuesday night said it is giving necessary assistance through its Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Seoul, SOuth Korea to the mother who had a mid-flight miscarriage aboard a Jeju Air flight from the Philippines to Incheon last Sunday.

The mother, who is an overseas Filipno worker in her thirties, was travelling with her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter from Clark International Airport and had rested at Incheon Airport as transiting passengers bound for Saipan.

"The DMW confirmed the unfortunate incident with the Philippine Embassy in Seoul citing that the reported newborn’s death was an “in-flight miscarriage on Jeju Air”," the agency said in a statement.

The DMW said a rescue team brought the OFW to INHA University Hospital in Incheon, but the newborn's heart had already stopped beating and unfortunately died.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said that the MWO-Seoul had contacted the OFW who is now in a safe condition. He said the department is extending help with the mother on their hospital bills and other needs.

South Korean authorities earlier said they are investigating the death of a baby born prematurely aboard a Jeju Air flight from the Philippines to Incheon, multiple reports said.

Emergency services had received a report that the infant delivered mid-flight on Sunday morning was not breathing. By the time they arrived, the newborn boy’s heart had stopped and he died after being rushed to a nearby hospital, the Korea JoongAng Daily and Yonhap News Agency reported.

Police said they would examine the circumstances surrounding the baby’s birth and death.

The mother, a Filipino woman in her thirties, was traveling with her husband, mother-in-law and daughter from Clark International Airport, the Korea Herald said.

It added that South Korean police said they have jurisdiction in the case as it occurred inside an aircraft registered and flagged in Korea.

The DMW said it will help in the autopsy of the baby and the repatriation of his remains.
