MANILA — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said it would tap Mary Jane Veloso to teach the Indonesian art of batik-weaving to her fellow Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW).

In a statement, BuCor Director General Pio Gregorio Catapang said he would boost the livelihood program at the CIW with the introduction of batik-weaving and hollow block-making.

Veloso was transferred to the Philippines last December after over 14 years of imprisonment in Indonesia due to drug trafficking.

The BuCor, Department of Justice, and CIW recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK Philippines) to improve the country's corrections system while safeguarding and empowering women PDLs.

Under the MOU, the parties will work on improving the lives of PDLs through nationwide technology upskilling and income-generation programs.

The BuCor issued the statement as 150 PDLs from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City were transferred last Sunday to the Leyte Regional Prison, the first batch for 2025, as part of the ongoing decongestion program of the BuCor.

The BuCor noted that a total number of 9,427 PDLs have been transferred to various Operating Prison and Penal Farms in the country.
