MANILA — Department of Justice officials are off to Indonesia on Friday for a meeting with their Indonesian counterparts to discuss the transfer of death convict Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines.

According to Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez, the Indonesian government asked for the face-to-face audience with Philippine authorities.

“I have already gotten tickets, I am gonna go with the secretary if he is able to finish his urgent matters,” Vasquez said.

Philippine officials are hoping that Veloso, who was sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking, will be transferred to the Philippines before Christmas.

“Kailan ang importanteng tanong at kung walang kondisyon mas maganda pero kung may kondisyon sila titingnan natin kung ano iyong magiging kondisyon na ilalagay nila kasi wala tayong tratado eh, we don’t have any treaty with Indonesia with respect to the transfer of sentenced persons,” Vasquez said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier thanked the Indonesian government for approving the return of death row convict Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines to serve her sentence.

Veloso — who was arrested in 2010 for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage — was supposed to be executed in 2015 until the last-minute arrest of her recruiter, who allegedly stashed the illegal drugs in her bags without her knowledge.
