MANILA -- Metro Pacific Tollways Corp Chairman Manny Pangilinan said he is open to waiving toll at the NLEX Connector to help ease traffic during the EDSA rebuilding which is set to start on June 13.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon earlier said San Miguel Corp has "agreed in principle" to waive toll in parts of Skyway Stage 3, where an influx of vehicles are expected during the rehabilitation of Metro Manila's main highway.

When asked if MPTC was open to offering the same, Pangilinan said: "We also have the connector, maybe we should do the same. I have to talk to the authorities."

"I think we should, San Miguel has taken the lead there...and I think we should follow their example," Pangilinan said on the sidelines of Meralco's Annual Shareholders' Meeting.

The NLEX Connector extends from Caloocan City to Sta. Mesa, Manila, offering motorists, including trucks, an alternative instead of using EDSA.

The government earlier said it was eyeing the extension of San Miguel Corporation's concession over the Skyway Stage 3 to allow it to recover revenue losses from the free use of parts of the elevated toll road.

The free toll, along with the implementation of an odd-even scheme, is one of the traffic management measures to help ease the burden on commuters as one of the nation's busiest highways undergoes repairs.

EDSA has a carrying capacity of 250,000 vehicles with over 464,000 motorists plying the thoroughfare daily, according to 2024 data from the MMDA.
