MANILA -- PLDT and Smart are giving away almost 500,000 SIM cards to Filipinos in remote areas to help with the government's digitalization push.

In a statement, PLDT said it hopes to distribute 473,000 SIM cards to 170 areas in the Philippines by the end of the year, as part of the government's efforts to distribute some 4.2 million SIM cards with 25GB of data each—to 510 remote areas nationwide.

The program, called the 'JuanSIM ng Bayan' initiative, aims to connect underserved communities.

Smart chief operating officer Anastacio “Boy” Martirez said distributing SIM cards helps ease the digital divide in the Philippines.

“A SIM card can open doors—to learning, to livelihood, to connectivity, and to a better future,” he said.

A newspaper report from Malaya Business Insight noted that the Private Sector Advisory Council urged Malacanang to speed up the implementation of the JuanSIM ng Bayan program in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s push for digitalization.

A PhilStar report said the Department of Education will handle the distribution of SIM cards to students in beneficiary schools.
