This Feb-ibig, will you choose Love or Money?

Clipboard

Content creators across social media platforms are doing man on the street interviews posing all sorts of questions to unsuspecting pedestrians.  One that came up on our feed recently asked young males which would you choose: a partner who is sexy but ugly, or pretty but fat?  I’m sorry for these crude labels, but their words, not mine.

The answers were entertaining, but even more interesting were the reactions in the chat.  After scrolling down and reading many of them, we realized there is no right answer, and no wrong answer too.

As we enter February, widely celebrated as the Love Month, this age-old question came to mind: will you choose Love or Money?

Let’s take a break from talks on savings, investments and best deals for this week.  Instead, we threw the Love or Money question to the world wide web, and captured the ones from netizens who gamely responded.  We picked the 5 best answers that may help you be grateful with what you have, or inspire you to find the right answer.

#1 Know what you want

Cardisa gave a long thoughtful reply and here’s the best part: “Choosing your life partner should depend on what you want for your future. Are you seeking emotional security, financial security or both? There is nothing wrong with choosing to love someone rich, nor is there anything wrong with choosing someone poor just for love. If money is important to you then choosing someone for love alone may be a wrong choice.”

#2 Love for rent?

Paul gave a one-word answer: “Money!”  Then he added that one can always rent love.  That sounded interesting because he may not have said it, but he is assuming that love has a price and can be bought.  A netizen reacted with “Yuck” on reading his reply, while another affirmed it saying “no romance without the finance.”  I’ve heard that you can buy love, but rent it?

#3 Money comes first

Vyanna looked at it like a chicken and egg situation, and replied that “Money comes before love because money makes the world move around. With money you can even buy love 100 percent. A person would rather cry in a mansion than smile in a shack.”  A netizen cheered her on saying it’s too bad “there are some unenlightened people who espouse a poverty, struggle mentality.”

#4 But Love is forever

Nones’ answer however will appeal to romantics.  “Of course love, because it is the only thing that does not get old over time. Compared to money, love is not just consumed and lost. It is a treasure that cannot be taken for granted.”  While I like the answer, I must correct her that money is not always lost.  One can grow it, preserve it, and with the right moves, it can even last beyond generations.

#5 Make your own money, then find love

Crreamm is more pragmatic.  She agrees with Nones that love is forever, but she offers advice on how to make it so. “No one should rely on anyone else to support them monetarily. You need to support yourself so that when you find love, it isn't conditional. Usually when someone is in a relationship because of money, that clouds their idea of love because they're invested in the relationship for other motives. If you make your own money, finding true love becomes an easier task.”

Of all the responses read and received, I like the ones that do not ask you to make a choice.  You can have both.  Maybe not loads of money and love.  Or loads of love and money.  But with hard work, you can have the financial independence to go and find your love and claim him or her.  Happy Love Month!
