MANILA - Lalamove is entering the ride-hailing market this year and will offer low fares as well as a low commission rate as an incentive to attract drivers to its service, the company formally announced on Monday.

Lalamove said it is targeting to onboard 15,000 drivers by June this year. The company said it will launch its service in the Greater Manila  Area, Pampanga, and Cebu.

The company, which commands a large chunk of the package delivery market in the Philippines, is seen to offer competition to Grab, which currently dominates the ride-hailing sector.

"And to make it more rewarding for partner drivers, we’re starting with a two-percent (2 percent) commission rate, so they get to take home 98 percent of their earnings on top of Panalomove partner driver benefits,” said Djon Nacario, Lalamove Philippines Managing Director.

Lalamove noted that in the past, desperate commuters used the app to get themselves "delivered" to their destination. This was however not allowed by its policy against transporting humans and other living beings.

“There may be a lot of competition in the ride-hailing scene, but it’s undeniable that many people have been clamoring for Lalamove to expand its services to ride-hailing even before the pandemic given the convenience and affordability we offer,” said Nacario.

Lalamove said it will also offer cheaper ride-hailing fares versus other platforms, while adhering to the ride-hailing pricing matrix of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The company however did not say how much its fares would cost.

Nacario also said that Lalamove Ride partner drivers can take both delivery orders and ride bookings – but not at the same time.

“For example, they can maximize their earnings through ride bookings during peak hours, and take delivery orders during non-peak hours. And like with delivery, our partner drivers have the liberty to choose the orders they want, aligned with our goal of democratizing on-demand delivery, and this time, even ride-hailing,” Nacario added.
