Kanlaon Volcano in Negros island erupted on Monday afternoon, Phivolcs said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the 3 p.m. eruption "produced a voluminous plume that rapidly rose to 3,000 meters."

Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or hot, ground-hugging flows of ash and debris descended from Kanlaon's southeastern slope.

Phivolcs raised the alert level for the volcano from 2 to 3 on a zero-to-five scale. Local governments were also advised to evacuate the 6-kilometer radius of the volcano.

CAAP MEDIA ADVISORY

Meanwhile, CAAP has again advised pilots to avoid flying near the Kanlaon volcano. CAAP said it has extended the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for flights near Kanlaon, with vertical limits from the surface to 10,000 feet.

"The latest NOTAM will be effective from December 10, 2024 at 5:18 p.m. to December 11, 2024 at 3:31 p.m.," the agency said.

Flight operators are advised to avoid flying close to the volcano due to possible hazards of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity, CAAP said.
