Iconic landmarks in New York lit up the colors of the Philippine flag for the 126th Philippine Independence Day.

In a display of solidarity with the Philippines, Niagara Falls turned red, white, blue, and yellow from dusk till dawn.

The One World Trade Center, meanwhile, illuminated its 414ft antenna to Philippine colors.

At the state capitol in Albany, Filipino-American representation was on full display.

"Today, we stand here inspired by their (heroes) courage as we continue to uphold the values of freedom and democracy they fought so hard to achieve," said Philippine Consul General Senen Mangalile.

Fil-Am assemblyman Steven Raga hosted the Independence Day reception to bring the Filipino community closer to officials at the capitol.

"It's so important that we are spending time well with all our elected officials," he said, "to see what the priorities are for our community."

Phil Ramos, the deputy speaker of New York's state assembly, underscored the importance of Filipinos having a seat at the table and be represented.

"That is the significance of what it means to have Steve Raga here," he said. "We hope to see many more. When they tell Filipinos, they cannot empower their community, what are you going to say? Yes, we can."

Community leader and organizer Enzo Manzano, meanwhile, stressed that there is strength in numbers.

"There are a lot of things that we want for our communities," he said, "whether it's funding for different services or just the beautification of our neighborhoods. It allows us to pursue these priorities when we organize together as a community."
