Filipino Muslims in Toronto marked the end of Ramadan with a celebration on April 14 at the Taric Islamic Centre.

The event began with the reading of the Quran, followed by messages delivered by Members of the Parliament.

This year's celebration held special significance for Filipino Muslims in Canada. They said this is their way of showing support for the 75th anniversary of Philippine-Canada bilateral relations.

A mini exhibit at the event showcased the history, culture, and arts of Filipino Muslims, and featured iconic items such as the "Kulintang" musical instrument, the "Malong" garment, alongside indigenous textiles, and weaves.

Photos, illustrations, and artifacts such as the "Torogan," a house used by ancient royalties like the Maranaos, were also displayed.

Norkhalila Mambuay, the exhibit curator, stressed that the main goal of the exhibit is to highlight the resilience of Bangsamoros in the Philippines, and demonstrate how they have thrived despite facing stereotypes as Muslims.

She also emphasized the exhibit's importance for young Filipino Muslims to reconnect with their heritage and roots.

“This is something that needs to be passed on,” he said, “the legacy, the pride. They have to know that they have a rich culture back home.”

Consul RJ Sumague expressed the support of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto for the Filipino Muslim community.

“FIlipino Muslims, of course, are a pillar of our heritage in the Philippines,” he said. “They strengthen our relations with our Canadian friends, and we are very happy to be a part of the celebration.”

Meanwhile, the Eid'l Fitr also marks the 15th founding anniversary of the Muslim Filipino Association of Canada, the organizer of the event.

The organization’s president reaffirmed their commitment to extending help not only to Filipino Muslims but also to all Filipinos in Canada.

“We make sure that everyone in our community who needs help, we know them, and we let them know that we're here for them,” said Jonathan Macala. “We're not exclusive, we're inclusive too. Our aim is to truly strengthen this community.”

As the celebration concluded, Filipino Muslims enjoyed the festivity and prayed for peace and prosperity for their fellow Filipinos.
