MANILA — A low pressure area (LPA) that formed east of Mindanao outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) early Sunday now has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, the state weather bureau PAGASA said.

The LPA may enter the PAR late Sunday or early Monday and will be assigned the local name Marce, said PAGASA.

PAGASA projects the weather disturbance to move toward northern Luzon, where a recent storm, Typhoon Leon, caused damage due to its violent winds and heavy rains.

Less than a week before Typhoon Leon struck, Severe Tropical Storm Kristine battered the provinces of Luzon and Visayas, leaving destruction in its wake and killing more than 100 people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency meanwhile upgraded the weather system to a tropical depression and issued a forecast track nearly similar to that of PAGASA's.

Weather forecasts often change and the public is advised to regularly monitor weather bulletins and reports for updates.
