Threats of landslide and flooding sent residents packing their belongings to seek temporary shelter in evacuation centers in the province of Apayao.

“Ang Apayao kasi is prone to landslide and flooding. Similarly ganun din sa Kalinga. Andun din yung mga river systems — the great Apayao River and of course, Chico River,” explained Albert Mogol, Regional Director of Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Cordillera.

The OCD said 277 families have evacuated. Of the 1,057 evacuees, 65 individuals preferred to stay in their kins’ homes.

The weather was relatively better in Apayao compared to the strong winds and heavy rains being experienced in Cagayan.

Apayao is still recovering from the severe flooding and several landslides caused by heavy rains brought by the tail-end of a cold front in early November.

The severe weather then killed three people and caused the provincial government to declare a state of calamity.
