MANILA - Four dams in Luzon have released water as Typhoon Rosita passes through northern Luzon, the state weather bureau said Tuesday.

Elmer Caringal, a hydrologist from PAGASA's Hydrometreology Division, said Ambuklao and Binga in Benguet, and Magat near Cagayan River have released water.

He said their record showed Ambuklao has been releasing 3.5 cubic meters of water; Binga with 4.5 cubic meters of water; and Magat Dam with 5 cubic meters of water.

The San Roque Dam in Pangasinan, which catches water coming from these reservoirs, has also opened its gates, releasing 350 cubic meters of water.

Despite this, Caringal said water in the Agno River Basin won't swell but residents near the river were advised to monitor their updates, especially if the heavy rains from Rosita will persist.

As of 5:00 pm Tuesday, the typhoon exited La Union and was last spotted 125 kilometers northwest of Dagupan City, Pangasinan. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 125 kms per hour and gusts of up to 190 kph.

It had approached the Philippine land mass over the weekend at maximum sustained winds of up to 200 kph and gusts of up to 245 kph.

Rosita is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Wednesday afternoon if it continues to move west northwest at 25 kph. -- report from Raya Capulong, ABS-CBN News
