MANILA -- A member of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and a purported asset refused to take a drug test after they were caught allegedly using illegal drugs in San Pedro, Laguna.

The suspects, PDEA agent Richard Gaufo and his companion Joseph Martin Patrick Borjal, were nabbed Saturday when police raided Borjal’s house in Barangay Pacita 1 through a warrant for illegal possession of firearms.

“Hindi naman siya [Gaufo] ang target. Ang target namin 'yung isa. Pagpasok namin... andun silang dalawa nagpa-pot session,” said Police Major Ryan Orapa, chief intelligence officer of the Laguna Police.

Police found 3 guns, bullets and a grenade in Borjal’s house.

Authorities were surprised to also find 10 sachets of suspected shabu, drug paraphernalia and a fake PDEA identification card with Borjal’s name.

“'Yung target ng warrant... merong meeting ng agents. May nagsabing may previous case ang taong ito, usurpation of authority, nagpapakilalang PDEA agent at nagbebenta ng shabu,” Orapa told ABS-CBN News.

“ID na peke ng target ng SW. May previous case na siya sa Sta. Rosa, year 2015," he added.

Gaufo claimed Borjal was a PDEA asset, police said.

Gaufo was formerly assigned in the Calabarzon region before he was transferred to the Cordillera Administrative Region.

ABS-CBN News tried to reach out to the suspects for comment, but they declined our request for an interview.

Gaufo and Borjal will undergo inquest proceedings on Monday.

“Nagkaproblema tayo sa crime lab. We made a request to undergo them sa drug test, ayaw talaga nila. Antagal naming naghintay hanggang madaling araw,” Orapa said.

“They insist na ayaw talaga nila. So we asked for legal advice. Nag-waiver sila. That waiver will be an attachment na lang."

In a statement, PDEA director general Aaron Aquino said Gaufo’s arrest is proof that crooked law enforcers exist even in the agency.

He denounced the erring agents and vowed to pursue them to the full extent of the law.

Aquino added that PDEA will continue to support and cooperate with the Philippine National Police in the campaign against illegal drugs.
