MANILA -- Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and his lawyers worked overnight on a petition to stop President Rodrigo Duterte from withdrawing amnesty that absolved him of charges over 2 failed military uprisings, his office said Wednesday.

Facing arrest, Trillanes was holed up in his Senate office and was working until 4 a.m. He is expected to meet his staff over breakfast of spam, eggs and rice, said his media relations officer Adette Romero.

Trillanes could not be arrested in the Senate premises while it is in session, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said. Sen. Leila de Lima, a Duterte critic like Trillanes, was arrested on drug-dealing charges in February 2017.

"I'm confident, having gone through even worse acts of persecution. 'Yung ganitong darkest moment normally susunod nito ang liwanag. I can feel malapit na itong si Duterte," Trillanes told reporters late Tuesday.

Trillanes was with his family and supporters late Tuesday, but only his staff and security stayed in the Senate overnight, Romero said.

Duterte administration officials said Trillanes failed to properly apply for amnesty, which the lawmaker secured in 2011 from then President Benigno Aquino III.

Trillanes was among the leaders of the Magdalo band of junior officers and soldiers who took over the Oakwood luxury apartments in Makati on July 27, 2003 to protest alleged corruption under then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

In 2007, the group walked out of their coup d'etat hearing and took over the Manila Peninsula hotel, also in Makati, in another protest against Arroyo.

During the 2016 presidential elections, Trillanes accused Duterte of keeping secret bank accounts, which the then Davao City mayor denied.
