MANILA - Binan, Laguna Rep. Marlyn "Len" Alonte-Naguiat on Monday denied involvement in an alleged P100-million bribery attempt to get inmates of the National Bilibid Prison (NBP) to recant their testimony against Senator Leila de Lima.

In a privilege speech, Naguiat said she was surprised that her name was dragged into the issue.

"I am surprised that my name, something I have protected very well my whole life, was dragged into baseless and false accusations," she said.

"I do not subscribe to illegal acts, and I will never participate in efforts to undermine the truth, because I am one with this administration in aiming for a Philippines free of drugs, corruption and criminality. This is my dream for my children and for every young Filipino," she added.

Holding back tears, Naguiat said she felt bad and questioned her role in government when the news of the alleged bribery attempt broke out.

"Aaminin ko po, noong una ko pong narinig ito, sumama po ang loob ko at inisip ko, ito ba ang gobyerno na aking ipinaglalaban? Ito ba ang partido na aking sinasamahan? Pero nung maisip-isip ko, hindi naman ako siguro nagkamali," she said.

"Naniniwala po ako na nangyari po ito sa akin, hinayaan po ng partido, hinayaan ng administrasyon, hindi dahil gawa gawaan man, hinayaan kahit ako'y miyembro ng PDP-Laban, dahil ang gobyernong ito ay transparent. Inisip ko na lang na ang gobyernong ito ay walang tinitingnan, walang kinikilingan, kapartido ka man o hindi, at dahil dito, dahil dito sa isip na pinanghahawakan ko, alam ko na dito sa administrasyong ito, makukuha ko ang hustisya dahil alam kong ang administrasyong ito ay patas," Naguiat added.

Naguiat concluded her speech by thanking her colleagues who support her.

"Ang suporta, pagmamahal na pinakita niyo sa akin, pinarating nitong mga nakaraang araw… akala ko po nung una, 'di ko maintindihan kung bakit ito nangyari sa akin…pero dahil sa pagmamahal, suporta tiwala…'yun nagpalakas sa akin. Naramadaman ko ang pagmamahal ng Diyos sa akin... Hindi ko po kayo malilimutan," she said.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre on Friday claimed that Alonte-Naguiat, former senator Jamby Madrigal, and Atty. Alvin Herrera were involved in an alleged P100-million offer to high-profile inmates to recant their testimonies against De Lima.

De Lima has denied Aguirre's allegations, and accused him of having a habit of "coming up with ridiculous claims."

"This is a habit of Sec. Aguirre--coming up with ridiculous claims, unprocessed information and accusations and I really don't know where all of these are coming from,” she said in a phone interview Friday. - with a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
