MANILA -- When Singaporean restaurant Wee Nam Kee opened in 2010, people would flock to the restaurant to try its signature dish, Hainanese chicken rice.

But since then, its menu has evolved, offering a variety of Asian dishes from the classic sweet and sour pork to the spice-packed beef rendang.

“We opened in 2010 here in the Philippines, it was the same menu not until 2014 when we injected new items. After, almost five years we did our relaunch (of the menu),” explained Relish Group marketing manager Angelo Hongo.

Recently, the restaurant launched new dishes, just in time for the coming holidays.

“Number one, we wanted to add dishes that our customers are looking for. We also wanted to create new spins to our bestsellers like our claypot chicken rice. People were asking if we can create a noodle version. We were apprehensive at first because it might not taste good, because when you say claypot chicken, it's really rice. But it turned out good so we decided to add it to our menu,” Hongo said.

So aside from rice, they now offer a noodle version of the popular Chinese dish. Then to mix things up, they added the Grilled US Flat Iron Steak in Sweet Soy Sauce, a dish one would not normally see on an Asian restaurant menu.

“It's our first time introducing a steak-ish dish. We wanted to serve something new and a twist to a regular beef dish that you would see in a Singaporean restaurant,” he said.

The restaurant uses USDA Choice beef in the dish and it's served in a sizzling plate with vegetables on the side.

Another dish is the Salt and Pepper Shrimp, a shrimp dish that is a little bit inexpensive compared to the popular Salted Egg Shrimps and Cereal Prawns. Again, this is something their customers have been asking for.

Then there's also a new rice dish, the Pineapple Fried Rice with Chinese Chorizo.

According to Hongo, the restaurant is offering these new items so loyal and new customers can try something new other than the famous chicken rice.

That's because Wee Nam Kee wants to be Filipinos' go-to Asian restaurant.

“For nine years, we've been known for Hainanese chicken rice. We want to still have that image but continuously add new items that would put us as top choice again. The new items would help strengthen the branding of Wee Nam Kee as your go-to Asian restaurant,” Hongo said.
