Mindanao choir tops South Korean international festival

The University of Mindanao Chorale won a $20,000, or almost P1 million, cash prize in the 13th Busan Choral Festival and Competition Grand Prix in South Korea.

DAVAO CITY - The University of Mindanao (UM) Chorale reaped another international award, this time at the 13th Busan Choral Festival and Competition Grand Prix held in South Korea last September 6 to 9.

The UM Chorale bested groups from 47 countries in the classical, mixed and folksong categories.

"We had prepared for this for almost a year," UM choir master Peter Buaya said.

The chorale's 24 members arrived in Davao City on Tuesday morning. One of them is bass Timothy Paul Atencio, who said he always stays positive as the competition nears.

"We never let our guard down," he said.

The UM Chorale won a $20,000, or almost P1 million, cash prize.

The group also won in the 9th Concentus International Choral Festival held in Singapore last year.
