Oftentimes, fitness is a choice. It's not something that happens one day when you wake up. It takes discipline, drive, motivation, and a personal decision to show up every single day. Such was not always the case for fitspiration, mother-of-two (a 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl), events host, and lifestyle content creator Jackie Go

She admits that she wasn't always the athletic type growing up, but sometime in her 20s, she realized that despite her youth, she wasn't feeling healthy—feeling tired and weak despite looking thin. That's when Jackie got into working out and hasn't stopped since. She fell in love with Pilates, and considers this her go-to up to this day.

We spoke to Jackie to find out more about her active lifestyle, how she juggles being a mom and a full-time content creator, and how she treats herself amid her busy schedule. Read on for today's dose of fitspiration!

Metro.Style: What kind of workouts do you love doing? How did you get into all these? Have you always been into fitness?

Jackie Go: Pilates being my first love is something I enjoy doing. I used to hate running (as I grew up with asthma) but now I really enjoy it! I used to do swimming (because of my asthma) and badminton as my sports but I can’t say I’m naturally born athletic. I got into working out in my 20s after realizing I wasn’t healthy. I looked thin yet I was tired most of the time and felt weak. It was also when I was walking my daughter to her school gate when a grandparent walking his granddaughter overtook me as I stopped to catch my breath—this was a pivotal moment for me when I realized I may look like a healthy and fit young mom but I wasn’t. So that’s when I decided to incorporate fitness into my lifestyle. And that started it all, first with trying Pilates then going to the gym, having a coach to work with, and now running races.

MS: How long have you been doing them and what are some challenges you've faced?

JG: I didn’t start after I gave birth to my firstborn, I started when she was already a toddler and it wasn’t until 2013 when I tried Pilates and stuck with it. The foundation of this workout made me appreciate what my body can do even if the goal was not to lose weight or shed post-baby fat. I saw the difference in my posture and my mood after regularly doing Pilates. The challenge for me was finding the right workout I'd like that would also challenge me at the same time. It was also challenging finding the time to incorporate working out as I was breastfeeding my second child then.

MS: Describe a day in your life, and how you manage to squeeze in time for a workout.

JG: On a typical weekday I wake up before 6 am so I can prepare lunch for my kids, then after bringing them to school, I do some quiet time (journal, meditate while the laundry is on). After my morning chores, I work out (rotation of Pilates, running, Lagree, and strength training at the gym). After which I get ready either for an event or lunch at home, then I go and pick up my kids from school, go home and do a bit of work (edit/shoot content) then prepare dinner. After dinner we get ready for bed and hopefully be asleep before 10 pm. That’s basically my daily routine. I like working out in the morning as I find It gives me endorphins and energy to get through the day.

MS: What about your diet? Do you follow a strict regimen and how does it supplement your activities?

JG: I like eating at home most of the time because I can prioritize protein. I don’t follow a strict diet but since I have an autoimmune (I have Sjogren’s syndrome) and digestion issues, I try to avoid food that triggers inflammation. I do make sure to balance it out. 70-30. I believe restricting yourself too much always backfires and eliminating certain foods completely makes you want it more. So, most days I eat a lot of proteins, greens, veggies, and fruits but during PMS/weekdays when I’m out or celebrating something I don’t deprive myself of fun foods like fast food, fried, processed food. I find that fueling my body with really good food I have more energy to workout. Realizing this has helped me be more consistent with choosing better food even if there’s fun food in front of me. It takes a while to form this habit but it’s really doable, I feel when I eat too much fast/junk food I end up lethargic/tired and won’t be able to work out as efficiently as I would when I eat healthier options. This way makes nourishing my body more sustainable because my end goal is longevity, not because I’m chasing to be lean or to lose weight (not that there’s anything wrong with these goals) but this isn’t my goal—I work out and as much as possible nourish my body because what I do now will determine what I can do when I’m in my golden/senior years. I want to be able to travel, walk and hopefully run races when I’m in my 60s! And for me to do that I have to start as early as now.

MS: How do you treat yourself?

JG: I treat myself with rest and recovery. I’m an introvert so having one day at home to rest is a treat for me! I also like watching TV shows, and reading a book as my downtime. I realized over a decade of doing this lifestyle that rest and recovery is equally important as working out. If I feel like I over-trained, I wouldn’t push it and would skip a workout. I also like getting a good massage. Downtime after a busy week is a treat in itself for me.

MS: What is your best advice for women struggling to maintain a fitness routine?

JG: When people ask me how to kickstart their fitness routine I always say the same thing—find a workout you like that challenges you at the same time—something you see yourself putting in your schedule and doing regularly. While it’s good to be motivated by what you see others are doing, you can’t be consistent if you don’t like what you’re doing. This goes not just for fitness but in other aspects of life. It can also be for nutrition; if you find it a hassle to meal prep, you can batch cook your meals for the week and just freeze it. If you really find cooking tedious and have no time because of work you can go for food subscriptions instead. Once you find a workout that you like and that challenges you, schedule and put it in your calendar like it’s an important meeting you cannot afford to miss. You wouldn’t miss a doctor’s appointment or an important work meeting, so why will you skip a workout? Especially if you’ve paid for a class. Also, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. If you miss a workout, don’t go spiraling, it’s okay. One day of not working out won’t ruin the progress you've made. If you feel the need to rest and recover, go for it. Keep in mind that rest is equally important as working out.
