MANILA -- TV host and former beauty queen Charlene Gonzales thanked Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen for giving her the chance to share the Filipino brand of hospitality during the country’s hosting of Miss Universe 23 years ago.

In a television interview, Sen recalled how Gonzales lent her earrings during the coronation night.

Sen said she lost her earrings along with her luggage and was on the verge of tears when Gonzales introduced herself as Miss Philippines and lent her a pair of earrings to match with her gown.

Gonzales' earrings were the ones Sen was wearing when she was crowned Miss Universe 1994.

Gonzales said as the Philippines' candidate, she was not only representing herself but the entire country as well.

“So again, let me thank you Sushmita for giving me the special opportunity to genuinely share the Filipino traits of hospitality, love, generosity and kindness to you and our fellow candidates,” Gonzales said in a statement.

“That for me was one of the best gifts and fulfillment that I received from the Miss Universe experience and I know if given the chance, any Filipino or Filipina would do the same to extend a helping hand,” she added.

Gonzales then went on to praise Sen and welcomed her back to the Philippines, this time as a judge for the Miss Universe pageant.

“You are a beautiful person inside and out. We welcome you back with open arms and we are genuinely happy you are in Manila. I look forward to the day when we will meet again. You will always have a special place in my heart and in the hearts of the Filipinos. Mahal ka namin,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales represented the Philippines in the 1994 Miss Universe pageant held in Manila, where she won the Best National Costume award and was one of the Top 6 finalists.

Sen took home the crown that year as the first Indian to win Miss Universe.
