Six notable actresses who played Mary in films, series

Mary, fondly called by Filipinos as “Mama Mary,” is one of most renowned figures Catholic women look up to. She is known by many other titles, and is revered by many for her significant role in Jesus’ life. With her simplicity, modesty, and utmost obedience to God, it is truly a challenge to follow in her footsteps.  

Nevertheless, the following actresses were able to make their mark as Mary in their respective religious films and series.  

Olivia Hussey

 British actress Olivia Hussey was one of the notable actresses who portrayed Mary. She was part of the 1977 television series Jesus of Nazareth.  

Rooted from the Gospels in the bible, the series revolves around the journey of Jesus prior to the nativity until his last days on earth.  

In March 2020, the actress shared her most shots from the film in an Instagram post.  

Roma Downey

Roma Downey, an award-winning Irish actress, played the role of Mary in the 2014 religious film Son of God, which depicted Jesus’ journey from his birth until his resurrection.  

One of Roma’s remarkable scenes from the film was her emotional encounter with Jesus, played by Diogo Morgado, when he was carrying the cross.  

Up until today, Roma still lives up to the teachings of the film, frequently sharing inspiring quotes and bible verses on her social media platforms.  

Vanessa Benavente 

Peruvian actress Vanessa Benavente is the latest addition to the group of actresses who portrayed the Virgin Mary in the historical drama series The Chosen, which was first released in 2017.  

Vanessa has been actively promoting the series on her Instagram account. It is now on its fifth season and features a three-part story about the journey of Jesus.

Charo Santos-Concio 

ABS-CBN's very own Charo Santos-Concio once played the role of Mary in the 2010 religious soap May Bukas Pa, starring then-child star Zaijian Jaranilla. 

Charo also played other faith-based roles in her acting career. One of which was her nun character Alice in the 2018 horror film Eerie.

Charmaine Rivera-Lagman  

Charmaine Rivera-Lagman was among the cast of the 1996 biblical drama film Kristo, starring Mat Ranillo III. She played the role of Mary, mother of Jesus.

Gloria Romero

 In 1954, Queen of Philippine Cinema Gloria Romero also portrayed Mary but not on television or film. She was chosen for role in the religious theatrical play Martir Sa Golgota, which was staged at the Manila Grand Opera House.  

According to Philippine Star columnist Ricky Lo, the said play was a “Lenten offering based on the life and passion of Christ.”
