Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo is set to join the cast of Hollywood Bowl’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Her inclusion in the cast was announced earlier this week to the delight and surprise of many of her fans.

Cynthia will be playing the role of Jesus in the musical.

“Just announced! @cynthiaerivo joins the Hollywood Bowl’s production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' this summer. The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, and three-time Oscar nominee is cast as Jesus in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical,” Hollywood Bowl wrote in their caption.

In her Instagram Stories, Cynthia expressed how excited she is for the upcoming musical.

“Just a little busy this Summer. Can’t wait,” she wrote.

According to the website of Hollywood Bowl, Jesus Christ Superstar is a “timeless work that explores the biblical portrayal of the extraordinary events that led to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot.”

The production will run from August 1 to 3 at the Hollywood Bowl. This isn’t the first time that Cynthia took on a role in the said musical as she previously portrayed Mary Magdalene in the 2020 version of the hit musical.

Fans expressed their excitement in the comment section after learning the news. Some of the fans of the award-winning actress shared how they can’t wait for Cynthia’s version of Jesus in the musical.

“Jesus is a black queer woman and you've gotta deal with it!! IM SOOOOOOO HAPPY,” another fan added.

Meanwhile, other religious netizens expressed their dismay after the announcement as they believed it is a mockery of their religion.
