EXCLUSIVE: True Faith lead vocalist Medwin Marfil comes out as gay

MANILA -- When Medwin Marfil, the lead vocalist of the 90s OPM band True Faith, posted and announced his marriage to high school batchmate Mark Angeles last weekend, fans were surprised to find out that he’s gay.

Medwin exclusively shared with ABS-CBN News his journey to his true self.

“I’ve always known that I’m gay ever since I was a kid. Pero dahil sa environment natin sa society, most of us sigurado lumaki sa napaka-conservative na setting. Sobrang mahirap. Lalo na nung I got into the music scene.” he said.

While he may be the star on stage singing their classic hit songs since 1993 when their first album came out, Medwin said he was an introvert. He wasn’t comfortable with all the attention towards him.

This added to the fear and anxiety to come out and reveal his true identity in public.

“I was scared of people finding out that I’m gay, being judged. It was a different climate dati. This was like many years, before a straight guy came out on TV. So ibang-iba talaga. It took me a long time to be comfortable with myself on stage.”

And while everyone was surprised with his sort of "coming out" party, Medwin said the most important people in his life knew about him and who he was.

“People in show business, people in the band scene knew about me. And they've known for a long time. So, people who are close to me -- family, friends, mga artists na kilala talaga ako, they've known all this time. So it’s been an open secret in the business.”

In fact, he already had a soft launch about his gender identity back in 2006.

“I did an interview dati sa Pulp magazine, and I said, to borrow the phrase ng mga millennials, I already said back then that I was sexually fluid. Pero, I guess nobody learned about it. So sabi ko, okay, nobody cared.”

Just like how he came out with his bandmates before, Medwin didn’t want the attention to go to his coming out as gay when he shared a photo of their wedding.

"Ayoko sanang 'yun ang [maging focus]. At this moment, I’m really proud of what have than what I have. It’s really about our marriage. Like, ‘oh, Medwin just came out’, but it’s more like Med found somebody and they’re in love. And I’m very proud of it, I’m very happy about it. I just can’t contain it," he said.

Medwin and Mark tied the knot last May 11 at Rockaway Beach in Pacifica, California.
