MANILA — Yeng Constantino on Monday apologized to a doctor she named in a recent vlog chronicling her and her husband’s “traumatic” experience in a Siargao hospital, which subsequently earned the singer wide criticism for “doctor-shaming” on social media.

The YouTube vlog, which was no longer available to view as of writing, saw an infuriated Constantino recalling her interactions with the doctor, whom she accused of having no sense of urgency and concern.

Yan Asuncion, Constantino’s husband, had showed signs of memory loss after cliff diving, she said in the video, but was not given immediate attention in the local hospital.

In a statement given to ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe, Constantino said: “Regarding the Siargao incident, yung mga recent posts ko was brought about by my high emotions dahil sa nangyari sa aking asawa whose life at that time I thought was in grave danger.

“Pagkatapos kong kausapin ang mga taong malapit sa akin I realized I should have been more responsible in my posts. I would like to apologize to Dr. Esterlina Tan and the other medical staff for the hurt that my post and vlog has caused them.”

Constantino, in her vlog, also detailed her frustration with the hospital’s lack of facility and preparedness. She recounted that there appeared to be no trained staff member to operate the X-ray machine, and that the scanner for brain hemorrhage was still packed in a box.

“Whatever concerns I had should have been coursed through the proper forum,” she said in her statement on Monday. “It was unfair to call her out on social media and I’m taking down the posts and the vlog immediately.”

As the vlog circulated over the weekend, many professionals and students from the medical field called out Constantino for “doctor-shaming” on Twitter, where her name became a trending topic at one point. Several pointed out that Constantino may have mistaken the doctor keeping calm for a supposed lack of urgency, and that provincial hospitals being short-staffed and lacking proper equipment is a systematic problem.

“I’m deeply sorry for the hurt I caused her at sa lahat ng mga medical professionals who were affected by my posts. There is no excuse. I will do my best to be more responsible next time,” Constantino said.
