MANILA – Last Thursday, the annual MYX Music Awards recognized artists in the local music scene at a star-studded ceremony held at the Kia Theater in Quezon City.

Rapper Gloc 9 was the big winner of the night, bagging Best Music Video for "Hoy," and Favorite Urban Music Video.

Sarah Geronimo took home the Favorite Song and Favorite Music Video awards for her hit "Tala."

Both winners were directed by multi-award-winning director Paul Basinillo, a long-time creative collaborator of Geronimo for some of her songs and concerts.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Basinillo shared in detail how he made his first-ever music video with Gloc-9 given the challenges they faced during production.

“It was a very technical music video. The song has a very inspiring message. It exemplifies the best characters of every Filipino. Amidst the hardships, we are still joyful people. That really inspired us to do it in a unique environment like tenement in Taguig,” he said.

“We used real talents from the community and they were all very helpful and good actors as well. We choreographed the whole scene to put meaning to Gloc-9’s words. If you view it several times now, you will see all the visual nuances. The hardest thing was we took it all in one shot without cuts and double time speed to give it a slow motion effect when we play it back,” he added.

All it took was three full takes and when the last one was done, the whole team started celebrating, Basinillo elatedly recalled.

Gloc-9’s Best Music Video for "Hoy" is considered the top award, for it was not subject to any fan votes.

“Tala,” on the other hand, is Geronimo’s biggest music video comeback to date. Since “Kilometro” and “Ikot-Ikot” became hits, it took the singer-actress some time to come up with another creatively driven video.

“It was challenging for us,” Basinillo quipped. “We had to shoot everything against green screen and generate the virtual background. The set was awesomely built and the editing was great thanks to a wonderful and talented team. Thanks to Sarah’s inputs and the awesome choreography of G-force, we were able to come up with something different.”

At the end of the awards night, the biggest haul went to Basinillo with four metals in tow. Thanks to the collaboration of these two artists, Basinillo continues to exceed expectations and push the boundaries and limits of production.

Presently, Basinillo just released Bamboo’s “C@ll” music video and is currently working on another one as of writing.
