There's a reason why Julia Barretto appears uncomfortable answering questions about having a real-life romance with onscreen partner Joshua Garcia — and it's a rather simple one.

"We both waited for this time to come and we don't want to lose our focus," she told ABS-CBN News' Gretchen Fullido as she explained her reluctance to enter a relationship at this point in her career.

Barretto and Garcia are coming off widely praised performances for "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and the movie "Vince & Kath & James." This led to clamor from their fans for them to turn reel into real.

But Barretto's sights remain firmly on her goal. Adding that she wants to make headlines because of her onscreen work rather than who she's dating, the teen actress furthered: "I want our work to speak for us and not because of what's happening behind the camera."

She also joked that much of the early years of her showbiz career were spent trying to find a partner for her and now she has two — Garcia and Ronnie Alonte, whom she shares the screen with in the ongoing primetime series "A Love To Last."

Barretto said she isn't going to let this second chance of sorts slip by. "I'm glad kasi before wala akong mahanap-hanap na love team and now I have two so that's really good," she said.

Among her previous leading men were Enrique Gil and Iñigo Pascual.

Barretto was speaking in an interview after renewing her contract with ABS-CBN on Friday. She hinted that she will be working on a possible movie soon, although she refused to reveal her partner for the project.
