MANILA — “Block Z,” billed as the Philippines’ first large-scale zombie flick, is nearly out — and here’s what its early audience members are saying about it.

Ahead of its nationwide release on Wednesday, early screenings were held for “Block Z” over the weekend, followed by a red-carpet premiere on Monday.

“Block Z,” on paper, is promising, and has all the makings of a big hit. It’s directed by Mikhail Reid, who helmed the acclaimed films “Eerie” and “Dead Kids”; produced by Star Cinema, the country’s largest movie studio; and has lead stars in Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia.

And going by its first reviews, “Block Z” lived up to and even exceeded expectations attached to those names, with moviegoers calling the film “world-class,” “heart-stopping” and “thrilling.”

A number shared that their screening erupted in cheers, while others commended the cast for their portrayal of students trapped inside a school amid a zombie outbreak.

Some even said “Block Z” is comparable to the likes of “World War Z” and “Train to Busan,” and are already asking for a sequel.
