MANILA -- Power utility Meralco has advised customers to be patient and wait for the arrival of the delayed billing for June due to the order of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to stagger the payment of electricity purchased from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

Meralco earlier announced that the reduction for June 2024 is P1.96/kwh, which translates to a reduction ranging from more than P300 to almost P1,000 for residential consumers.

When asked what should have been the overall increase had the increase in generation charge been implemented in one full swing, Meralco says the increase should have been P0.77/kwh.

But because of the ERC order, consumers will enjoy a P1.96/kwh reduction but the staggered payment for WESMm of P0.77/kwh will be tucked in the generation charge from July to September.

When asked if consumers are at a disadvantage by the staggering the WESM payments, Meralco said the amount to be paid is the same, just staggered.

This means that at the end of the day, consumers will pay for the impact of the series of yellow and red alerts that plagued the Luzon grid from late April to May.

The ERC said it hopes that the generation charge for July and the succeeding months will be lower due to the normalization of power plants and cooler weather, neutralizing the P0.77/kwh hike already included in the July, August and September billing, as a result of staggering the payment for WESM purchase.

DELAYED BILLS, PAYING IN ADVANCE

Meralco has advised consumers who want to pay in advance, whose bills have not yet arrived, to transact with business centers or via the Meralco app.

Meralco has explained that the amount to be paid by consumer without the actual billing may not be enough to cover the June bill, which may result in the issuance of a disconnection notice.

The company has advised consumers to just wait for the bill as delivery couriers have been told to double time to cover more customers.

Meralco has assured consumers that the due date of their delayed bills will be also be adjusted, meaning consumers will have ample time to prepare the payment.
