MANILA (UPDATED) — The Department of Transportation has formally awarded the operations and maintenance of Laguindingan Airport, which serves the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Marawi, to Aboitiz InfraCapital in a move that the department said would "level up" Mindanao's second busiest gateway.

The privatization of airport operations comes weeks after the expansion of Laguindingan's passenger terminal to accomodate more travelers.

"We are confident in the technical and management capability of Aboitiz to elevate Laguindingan to global standards, especially at improving passenger service," Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said in a release.

The agency also highlighted the enhanced passenger service at the Mactan Cebu International Airport which is also being operated by AIC.

MCIA's Terminal 2 recently attained a prestigious 4-star rating from globally renowned aviation consultancy Skytrax.

AIC will invest P12.75 billion in renovating and upgrading the airport's airside and landside facilities, passenger terminal building, and equipment "to transform the airport into a world-class facility, enhancing passenger experience and fostering regional growth," DOTr shared on its Facebook post.

The Laguindingan Airport Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project is a 30-year program to upgrade, expand, operate and maintain the airport over two phases.

Aboitiz InfraCapital will reconfigure terminal space at Laguindingan and build, maintain, and repair a new Passenger Terminal Building, DOTr said.

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City in Metro Manila is also going through renovations to its Terminal 4 as part of improvements by private firm New NAIA Infrastructure Corp., which took over airport operations in September.

Privatization, through concession agreements and publi-private partnerships, comes with concerns over higher terminal fees and similar charges to maximize profit for firms participating in the projects.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Friday that China will "play along to the end" if the United States is bent on suppressing the country.

Wang, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, said China would respond resolutely to unilateral "bullying" practices but hopes the U.S. can work together with it in the same direction.

Asking about China's stance on the Ukraine conflict, Wang said China believes all parties and stakeholders should participate in peace talks on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and that, Europe, should also play an important role in the process to help address the root cause of the crisis.

Wang strengthened in his speech that China sees Europe as an important pole in a multi-polar world and regards the two sides as partners, not rivals.
