If you’re mesmerized and stuck in a doom scroll through vanity reset videos and decluttering TikToks, you’re not alone. You are most likely looking for inspiration to also revamp your beauty space so it’s ready for the year ahead.

It’s a daunting task. If you’ve amassed quite a collection, it may be hard to figure out what to prioritize and what to keep for those “just in case” scenarios. You might also be clueless as to where to start.

When it comes to anything that might be overwhelming, it’s best to break it down into little components.

It’s time to put down that phone and do your vanity reset on your own.

Below are the steps to follow so you can use January for a vanity reset that can help you stay organized throughout the year. Taking a video is optional.

1. Know what you’ve got

Pool together every single beauty item you have in one space so you can quickly assess which categories apply to you. Don’t forget the stray lip glosses and random blotting sheet packs lingering in your bags and drawers.

2. Take, Toss, Store

Still overwhelmed? Allow us to borrow from the first “Sex and the City” movie. Stick to Charlotte York’s three categories: Take, Toss, Storage.

It will be obvious at this point that items past the expiration date, anything that you don’t see yourself using in the future, and anything that’s grown mold or has discolored goes into the “Toss” pile.

In making your “Toss” pile, you’ll inevitably see what items compose your “Take” stash. Unopened products that are still within their best before date and backups of your favorites, are of course, for your “Keep” storage.

3. Get specific

Deal with your “Take” pile first. Chances are these heavily-used items that you will carry on using this year. Divide your “Take” loot into their respective sub-categories. The most obvious of which is how you’ll find them arranged in a drugstore or beauty website: makeup, body care, hair care, skincare, and tools. You are, of course, free to come up with your own categories depending on your preference, routine, and lifestyle.

4. Don’t let go of your favorites

The fun part starts now. Arrange your products wherein your everyday essentials are easily accessible. Regardless of what look or ingredient comes into trend, don’t let go of what is a staple for you. Such a system will also save you on days when you have no time to get ready or when you can’t take too long to prepare. This way, everything is set and you know you won’t miss.

After that, you can incorporate the items in your collection that you want to use more often. The expression “out of sight, out of mind” holds true when it comes to how we forget to that lipstick we bought weeks ago or to add that extra step into our bath routine. Don’t let a potential holy grail product fall by the wayside just because it’s buried under other things.

5. Note some trends

A good way to save up some money and maximize your collection is to know early what will be trending this year. You’ll most likely find that you have some products that fall into that trend, saving you from buying duplicates.

When it comes to makeup, the 2024 prediction is all about lip stains and lip tints worn solo or combined to achieve that ombre effect (think cherry cola lips). Silver and blue eyeshadows are also set to take over this year. Skincare will focus more on protecting the skin barrier, so hold on to those serums and moisturizers that should be be used alternatively with your active ingredients. Body care and hair care will adapt the multi-step routines, the way we have so many products for the face. You vanity reset will allow you to leave some shelf space for new body and hair stuff you’ll discover.

6. Clean your tools and untangle your wires

Now is the chance to deep clean every single thing you use on your face, hair, and body. Arrange them in the order by which you use them, and give them their designated places so you never lose them.

(Editor's note: don't forget to clean your makeup brushes regularly, not just once a year!)

7. Make sure your storage is immaculate

Your “Storage” pile is where your backups are found, along with unopened items you’ve been meaning to incorporate into your life. Create a system within this category that suits your beauty habits. Find a way that when you look at it, you’re encouraged to “shop your stash”, so you’re not tempted to buy impulsively.
