Small but terrible.
This cliché is probably the first thing that comes to mind everytime the name of Shan Cai is mentioned -- the tough lady we began to admire 15 years ago. Since then, the iconic character has been an inspiration for girls of all ages not to be easily dragged down by bullies and challenges in life and fight for what is right and just.
She might get in trouble innumerable times because of her outspokenness and insurmountable courage to dare the notorious F4, but that didn't stop her from displaying her genuine self. Her stubbornness might have annoyed other people around her, but this is also the same reason why she earned the admiration of the introvert Hua Zi Lei and the bratty and violent Dao Ming Si.
Besides, we also find her relatable because of her “never say die” spirit when it comes to achieving her dreams and her formidable love and loyalty to her family and friends.
Through the years, Meteor Garden has been adapted by different countries across the world, with the original and Taiwanese version and the remakes of Japan and South Korea as the most popular ones here in the Philippines. We already met three renditions of the famous character, chronologically, Barbie Hsu, Mao Inoue (aka Makino Tsukushi), and Ku Hye-sun (aka Geum Jan-di).
Now, it's time for China to introduce their own Shan Cai through promising actress Shen Yue.
This adorable leading lady isn't really new to the eyes of Kapamilya viewers for her breakout web drama, A Love So Beautiful, was shown in the network early this year.
Born on February 27, 1997 in Hunan, China, Shen Yue’s rise to stardom was really unexpected, though it was her ambition to be a TV writer and director.
In her sophomore year in Hunan Normal University, she became interested with photography and developed connections and friendships with other photographers. By all accounts, she was at one of her friends' photo sessions when the model of the shoot had to back out last minute. She stepped in and posed as a firefighter in place of the model.
Her photogenic snaps uploaded online caught the attention of a talent agent and invited her for an interview in Beijing, marking the kick-off of her showbiz career.
In 2016, the 21-year-old actress had her debut in the fantasy dramedy Let's Shake It! where she played a maid. It was succeeded by her small role in the period drama Autumn Harvest Uprising.
The year 2017 had been a prolific and lucky year for her because aside from scoring her first-ever starring role through A Love So Beautiful, it was also confirmed that she would portray Shan Cai in the 2018 remake of Meteor Garden.
As the filming for the series wrapped up, she is about to appear in another Chinese drama entitled Another Me.
Trivia: Her height difference with her on-screen partners is greatly noticeable, with the audiences wondering if she's just vertically-challenged or her loveteams partners are just too tall. Thus, in order to shatter the fuss, she posted a photo on her social media account where she is seen measuring her height. She stands 160cm.
