Heavy rains across Kenya have killed at least 38 people, displaced more than 11,000 and forced hundreds from their homes in recent days, data from the Kenya Red Cross Society showed on Tuesday (April 23).

In Kiambu county outside the capital Nairobi, resident Kevin Wesonga told Reuters a collapsed wall killed one of his neighbors during the downpour. Wesonga himself was displaced after his house flooded and is now staying with his sister.

Further southeast in Machakos county, Caroline Wambui and her children took refuge at Kinanie Level Three Hospital for two days after floods destroyed their home. Wambui filmed videos as they waited atop their roof for rescue before wading through waters until a search party reached them.
