Skeletons took over Mexico City’s iconic Paseo de la Reforma avenue on Saturday (November 2) during the annual Day of the Dead parade.

Locals and foreigners turned out on the streets to enjoy the spectacle of skeleton-themed floats, costumes and massive marionettes celebrating Mexican culture, life and death.

Drawing on beliefs that the dead can return from the underworld, yearly celebrations of Dia de los Muertos start on the first day of November with the Day of the Innocents to honor departed children, and end the next day with the Day of the Dead for adults.

The idea for Mexico City to hold an annual Day of the Dead parade came from the opening scene of the movie "Spectre" in which the British spy character James Bond chased a villain through a crowd of spectators watching a similar parade in the Mexican capital.
