MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday reiterated the Philippines’ “unwavering support” for its “valued partner” Ukraine as the European country marked the 1,000th day of its war against Russia.

Marcos Jr. gave the statement about five months after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Manila to seek the Philippines’ support in holding a peace summit.

“In my meeting with President @ZelenskyyUa on June 3rd, I reiterated the PH's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity,” Marcos Jr. said in a tweet, tagging Zelenskyy’s official X account.

“It is our hope that we will see comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” the Philippine President said.

“Ukraine is our valued partner, and our relations continue to go from strength to strength,” he added.

In June, the Philippines committed to send medical professionals to Ukraine to help care for the psychological needs of Ukrainian soldiers in the frontlines of the war.

In 2023, Ukrainian envoys asked the Philippines to consider investing in peaceful parts of Ukraine as Kyiv tried to recoup some economic losses from the war with Russia.

The conflict began as early as 2014 when Russian forces took over Crimea. Fighting erupted anew in 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin deployed troops to occupy parts of eastern Ukraine.
