Air quality in India's capital city remained 'hazardous' as a thick layer of toxic smog blanketed New Delhi on Sunday (November 17).

Pollution levels continued to soar high as Delhi recorded an air quality index (AQI) score of 692 in the morning. Iconic landmarks, including the India Gate war memorial, were obscured by the dense smog as locals jogged and walked in the area.

Residents said they were resorting to masks to combat the effects of pollution.

India's government banned non-essential construction in New Delhi.

State chief Atishi also directed all primary schools to shift to online classes.

The city battles smog - a toxic mix of smoke and fog - every winter as cold air traps dust, emissions, and smoke from illegal farm fires.
