There's yoga, and then there's trauma-informed yoga. Fortunately for us, we got to meet Eileen Ramos, a Filipina who specializes in such. According to the Cleveland Clinic, 'Trauma-informed yoga is practiced in a safe space with teachers or therapists who respect you and your boundaries. They can help you learn how to control and manage what your body and mind are going through. As you combine movement and breath, you start building back those mind/body connections.' If you're one who wants to get into fitness minus the peer pressure, then we think this may be for you.

Before discovering the joys of yoga, I explored various creative pursuits, including makeup artistry for advertising, events, movies, and TV. I was also once a real estate agent, so I was quite the jack of all trades! However, my heart led me to the practice of yoga and meditation, and I've been hooked ever since!

These days, I enjoy sharing the beauty and benefits of yoga and meditation with anyone who's willing to try them out. I strongly believe that these practices have the potential to transform lives by improving physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. When I teach, I like to add humor and wit to my classes and even use relationship metaphors, which in Tagalog is known as 'hugot,' to make yoga more relatable. This inspiration led me to create my brand, Eileen Who Got Yoga, as a pun for 'hugot' yoga.

I also love to share my journey and insights with others through content creation on various social media platforms. It's been an incredible way to connect with like-minded individuals, build a community, and hopefully inspire others to try yoga too.

On her love affair with exercise…
When I'm not flowing through yoga poses, you'll often catch me at the gym. I also enjoy lifting weights and challenging myself in new ways. There's something incredibly empowering about feeling strong and capable in your own body, and weightlifting definitely helps me tap into that inner warrior. Before the pandemic, I also enjoyed wakeboarding, not that I could do tricks on the water, but just going around the man-made lake in Nuvali. I sometimes run, but that turns out to be just walking most of the time.

I'm always on the lookout for new ways to keep my fitness routine fun and exciting. Recently, I discovered Chairlesque—a sultry and empowering dance fitness style that incorporates a chair. It's been a blast learning new moves and challenging myself in a whole different way.

For me, it's important to have that enjoyment factor in my workouts. It keeps me motivated and energized, and reminds me that fitness isn't just about hitting certain milestones or burning a certain number of calories. It's about finding joy in movement and discovering new ways to connect with my body and express myself.

Believe it or not, I wasn't always the picture of health and wellness that I am today. Back in the day, I was one of those people who only hit the gym when summer was right around the corner, and I'd resort to crash diets to try and get that 'beach body.' Looking back, I realize that I was never really healthy, even if I was slimmer at times and I wasn't really into sports or exercise growing up.

However, all that changed when I discovered the transformative power of yoga. I've been practicing for 9 years now, and my journey has taken me from strong, intense flows to gentle, meditative practices and back again.

I've discovered a whole new world of fitness and wellness. It's been a journey of self-discovery, of learning to listen to my body and cultivate a deeper sense of mindfulness and awareness. And if someone like me, with no real background in sports or fitness, can find this kind of transformation, then I truly believe that anyone can do it too.

My focus is now on mobility and mental health, with regular strength training at the gym to supplement my yoga practice. I've learned that being healthy and fit isn't just about having a certain body shape or weight—it's about feeling good from the inside out. That's why I focus on a holistic approach to health, one that encompasses both physical and mental well-being.

On her diet…
When I'm not on my mat or at the gym, you'll probably find me in the kitchen, whipping up healthy meals and snacks. Of course, I'm only human, and I love to indulge in a slice of cake or a decadent dessert every now and then. But I make sure to balance out those treats with healthier options like my favorite fruits - mango, jackfruit, and dragonfruit - which are always stocked in my fridge. After all, life is all about finding that perfect balance, whether it's on the mat, at the gym, or in the kitchen!

On what her days are like…
My day always begins with a refreshing glass of water, followed by a strong black coffee. If I have an early morning class to teach, I'll have a quick breakfast and save my workout for later. However, if time permits, I like to hit the gym or go for a brisk walk to get my blood pumping and start my day off right.

As a yoga teacher, I have clients to attend to during lunchtime, so I make sure to schedule my workouts accordingly. I track my progress and strength training using a handy app on my phone, which helps me stay motivated and accountable. If my body is feeling fatigued, I'll opt for a restorative yoga session and perhaps even take a nap, especially on days when I have to work late into the night to accommodate clients in different time zones.

Since my schedule can be quite unpredictable, I make sure to find time to create content for my business in between client sessions. However, I've learned that self-care is crucial to avoid burnout, so I try to make my weekends more relaxing and focused on rejuvenation or catching up on computer work.

On being kind to herself…
I never underestimate the importance of filling my cup before sharing my energy with others, and I even make it a point to schedule self-care appointments, such as a two-hour massage, to prioritize my well-being. Balancing work and personal life is a never-ending challenge, but taking care of myself ensures that I can give my best to my clients and loved ones.

Through my journey, I've also learned that it's important to be kind and compassionate to oneself. It's easy to get caught up in self-criticism and negative self-talk, but that only leads to a cycle of discouragement and setbacks. Instead, I try to focus on self-love and self-care and remind myself that progress is not always linear.

Of course, there are still days when my anxiety gets the best of me. But on those days, I remind myself that movement is always an option. Even if it's just a short walk around the block or a few minutes of stretching, any kind of movement can help to shift my mood and release tension from my body.

It's also been helpful for me to connect with others who are on a similar journey. Whether it's through a yoga class, a fitness community online, or making friends at the gym and dance studio, having a support system can make all the difference when it comes to sticking with a healthy lifestyle.

It's important to love yourself at every stage, to celebrate your progress and successes, and to maintain discipline without comparing yourself to others. Through my experiences, I've learned that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness. We all have different bodies, lifestyles, and preferences, and what works for one person might not work for another. That's why it's so important to find what feels good for you - whether that's yoga, weightlifting, dance fitness, or something entirely different.

Her top three takeaways…
- Consistency is key: It's not about being perfect, it's about showing up consistently and doing your best. Whether it's yoga, strength training, or any other form of exercise, make it a regular part of your routine and stick with it.
- Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels and adjust your workouts accordingly. Push yourself when you can, but also know when to rest and recover. This will help prevent injury and allow you to make steady progress over time.Embrace self-love and compassion:
- Don't compare yourself to others or hold yourself to unrealistic standards. Love yourself in every stage of your fitness journey, celebrate your wins, and be kind to yourself when you face setbacks or challenges. Cultivate a positive mindset and focus on the process, not just the outcome.
