4 'confidential communications' on Duterte drug war reach ICC

MANILA - At least 4 &quot;confidential communications&quot; about President Rodrigo Duterte&#x27;s drug war have been filed before the International Criminal Court, the Commission on Human Rights revealed Thursday.CHR Chair Chito Gascon said these communications, one of which involves alleged violations against women and children, were filed as early as 2016 by non-government organizations.&quot;We are aware that there are other confidential communications that have been submitted from the Philippines, as well as internationally submitted communications,&quot; he told ANC.Gascon said these confidential communications are different from the one filed by lawyer Jude Sabio and the one filed by a group of drug war victims. &quot;There will be only one complaint but the communications will constitute a body of facts or information that will prompt them a decision to investigate further,&quot; he added.While hardly any cases related to the drug war have reached the court, he said it is not yet too late for Duterte to show that he is determined to make people behind the killings accountable.The ICC already launched a preliminary examination on these communications, and the CHR chief said they are willing to cooperate with the Netherlands-based tribunal.As the ICC examines the communications, the Philippines has already sent a notice of withdrawal from the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the ICC, following Duterte&#x27;s order.Lawmakers and opposition groups questioned the notice of withdrawal, arguing that the executive branch still needs concurrence from Senate to do this.<div>ANC, October 4, 2018</div>
